I guess it depends on your needs. Personally, though, I think that netbooks are cheap enough (at least in Japan) that instead of paying for a good notebook you can have both a netbook to do your business outside and a wide screened desktop at home.

Also, with a nice internet nowadays you don't really need DVDs or even a large HD: everything is stored online, from important documents to personal pictures and blockbuster movies.
